Like all the men in his family, the main character possesses the power to travel in time. With the advice of his father, he uses his special ability to pursue his romantic interest, save his sister, and optimize every messy aspect of his life.
What’s it about: time travel.
What’s it really about: living each day to the fullest
The impossible mission of living our very best life, every day, is the one we all must accept. Even if we don’t have a body double, a stuntman, special effects or time travel on our side. Even if we face the same insecurities each day. Or have to accept that some things cannot be changed.
My favorite part of the movie includes a time traveller’s secret formula for happiness: live each day again. “The first time, with all the tension and worries that stop us noticing how sweet the world can be, but the second time, noticing.“
“Some days you’ll want to relive forever [...] Some days, of course though, you only want to go through once. “
What to do with all the days in between, you ask? The movie’s ending answers this in the most beautiful way possible: Try to live everyday as if you’ve deliberately come back to this one day to enjoy it as if it was the full, final day, of your extraordinary ordinary life.
This right there is the real superpower of the main character, and not time travel. The best part: we all have it. We just have to decide to use it.
Live 2021 like it will be the year you’ll all want to return to, over and over again!
